Membership in the National Motor Freight Traffic Association

Since 1956, the National Motor Freight Traffic Association, Inc. (NMFTA) has represented the interests of the less-than-truckload (LTL) motor carrier industry. NMFTA is committed to helping LTL carriers meet the challenges confronting the transportation industry in the 21st century through research, education, and the publication of specifications, rules, transportation codes and the preparation and dissemination of studies, reports and analyses. Membership in NMFTA is available to all for-hire interstate and intrastate motor carriers. Membership entitles the carrier to serve on NMFTA’s working committees, to be elected to the Classification Resource Committee (CRC) and to participate in the National Motor Freight Classification® (NMFC®).

Participation in the National Motor Freight Classification

Participation in the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) allows carriers and other transportation companies to use or reference the copyrighted NMFC in their tariffs, rate schedules, or contracts with their customers. Carriers and transportation companies whose rates, charges or terms of transportation — including packaging and bills of lading — are based on, or reference, the NMFC or any of its provisions must participate in the NMFC. Members of NMFTA automatically participate in the NMFC, as a benefit of their membership. Other carriers and transportation companies can participate by completing a license agreement and paying an annual participation fee.

Other benefits of NMFC participation

All participants receive a single seat license to ClassIT®, the online version of the NMFC. Participants may contact the Commodity Classification Standards Board (CCSB), without charge, for assistance in the proper interpretation and application of the NMFC, including guidance in determining the applicable classification for a particular commodity, and consulting on packaging specifications and requirements.

Participants receive a discount when purchasing classification products, including the NMFC book, additional licenses to ClassIT, and NMFC data. Participants also receive a discount on NMFC training, including NMFTA’s Freight Classification Webinars as well as Customized, On-Site Training Seminars.
