Participation/Membership

Participation in the National Motor Freight Classification

Participation in the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) allows a motor carrier or other transportation company to use or reference the NMFC in its tariffs, rate schedules or contracts with its customers. Carriers or transportation companies whose rates, charges or terms of transportation — including packaging and bills of lading — are based on, or reference, the NMFC or any of its provisions must participate in the NMFC.  Participation is accomplished by the completion of a limited Power of Attorney, authorizing NMFTA to publish the company’s participation in the NMFC, and payment of an annual fee.

Purchase of the NMFC, or assignment of a Standard Carrier Alpha Code (SCAC) does not satisfy the requirement for participation.

To become a participant, please contact Paul Levine at 703-838-1822 or membership@nmfta.org.

What are the other benefits that carriers gain from participation?

Participants may call or email NMFTA staff for guidance, direction, and consulting on relevant subjects related to the classification of a commodity. This includes hazardous materials, packaging requirements, or clarification on the class of a product.

Participants receive a discount when purchasing their classification products, including the NMFC Book, ClassIT® 2.0, the on-line NMFC, and the NMFC data CD-ROM.

Participants receive a discount on the One-Day NMFC Training Seminars and/or Customized Training Seminars.  Companies training 5 or more employees usually will find customized training to be a more cost effective solution.  Customized Training Seminars offered include NMFC, Weighing & Research, ClassIT, Hazardous Materials, and Packaging Training.  These seminars  can be provided at your company’s location.

Participants are eligible to be elected as members of the Classification Resource Committee (CRC), which serves to provide advice, information, and other resources to the Commodity Classification Standards Board (CCSB).  The CCSB is the new autonomous classification-making board.

Participants receive a biannual NMFTA newsletter covering Association and industry news and activities.

Membership in the National Motor Freight Traffic Association

Membership in NMFTA is available only to motor carrier participants in the NMFC that complete and sign the National Motor Freight Traffic Agreement. Members have a voice in the business affairs of the Association and are eligible to be elected as members of the Classification Resource Committee (CRC).
